Partisan Pelosi Remarks Kill Federal Bailout

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Nancy Pelosi couldn’t get enough Democrats to agree to the bailout bill so she needed Republicans in order to get it passed.  So what does she do in order to engender some bi-partisan support?   Blame the Republicans and specifically President Bush.

When was the last time anyone ever asked you for $700 billion?

It’s a staggering figure and many questions have arisen from that request. And we have been hearing a very informed debate on all sides of this issue here today. I’m proud of the debate.”

$700 billion. A staggering number, but only a part of the cost of the failed Bush economic policies to our country. Policies that were built on budget recklessness when Pres. Bush took office, he inherited Pres. Clinton’s surpluses – four years in a row budget surpluses on a trajectory of $5.6 trillion in surplus. And with his reckless economic policies, within two years, he had turned it around. And now 8 years later, the foundation of that fiscal irresponsibility, combined with an “anything goes” economic policy, has taken us to where we are today.

They claim to be free-market advocates, when it’s really an anything goes mentality. No regulation, no supervision, no discipline. And if you fail, you will have a golden parachute and the taxpayer will bail you out.

Those days are over. The party is over in that respect.

Democrats believe in a free market. We know that it can create jobs, it can create wealth, many good things in our economy. But in this case, in this unbridled form, as encouraged and supported by the Republicans — some Republicans, not all — it has created not jobs, not capital, it has created chaos. And it is that chaos that the Secretary of the Treasury and the Chairman of the Fed came to see us, just about a week and a half ago. It seems like an eternity, doesn’t it? So much has happened. The news was so bad. They described a very dismal situation.

Well, Madame Speaker, you are right about one thing, the party is over.  Today, you got the lights turned out and you were the one left standing in the dark.

Republican Mark Pence contends that the vote today not in terms of the failure of a bill but as a victory for the American people.

“Today Congress took a stand for the American taxpayer and free markets. The American people rejected this corporate bailout and today the People’s House did likewise.

“It is now imperative that Congress come together and develop a response to the crisis facing our financial markets that reflects the American people’s belief in personal responsibility and fiscal discipline.

“There are alternatives to the massive federal bailout that Congress rejected. I look forward to working with my colleagues in both parties to develop a response to this crisis that puts taxpayers first and preserves the essential freedom of the American marketplace.”

The final vote had 94 Democrats voting against the bill.  An important message should be clear to the Speaker from this vote–you are only one vote and can not pass any legislation without the support of others.

If the oil crisis is so dire that Democrats want to release oil from the Strategic Reserves, is it not dire enough for them to return to Washington an do something meaningful?

No No Nancy Pelosi Says No to Energy Relief and Leaves Town

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

The Democratic answer to high gasoline prices?????  They call it a day and head home.  The Republicans continue to try to get relief for the taxpayers.

Not Even at $10 a Gallon for Gas?

Friday, August 1st, 2008

It is obvious the the Democratic leadership of both the House and Senate will not consider any plan for domestic drilling no matter the hardship it places on American consumers.  The video below demonstrates the “Just say no” mentality that is continuing to keep the price of gas at a level that is negatively impact the personal and national finance.

The exchange is between Mitch McConnell, Republican minority leader of the Senate, and Ken Salazar, Democrat from Colorado.

Despite the fact that current pending legislation would pass if allowed a vote, it seems that the Congress will not act on any kind of energy relief before they break for the August recess

Senate Passes Economic Stimulus Bill

After losing a battle for more provisions than contained in the House version, Senate Democrats accepted less than what they wanted and grudgingly passed the Republican supported version.

Voting on the bill had been delayed until yesterday to allow the primary candidates to be present for the first vote. However, even the votes of Clinton and Obama could not overcome the Republican’s block of the inflated legislation favored by the Democratic leadership.

Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, urged the Democratic Senators not to continue pushing for add-ons and to pass the bill so that the stimulus package can quickly be sent to the the president for his expected signature.

The number crunch for how much this rebate is costing the recipient can be found here.

More green for greens from Madam Speaker

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

When Nancy Pelosi took the gavel as the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives in January 2007, she noted the event as

a[n] historic moment for the women of this country. It is a moment for which we have waited over 200 years. Never losing faith, we waited through the many years of struggle to achieve our rights. But women weren’t just waiting; women were working.

And now the fruits of her first year of work have been revealed: not in the end of the war, not in the balancing of the budget, not in the salvation of social security but in that great national crisis of the Congressional cafeteria.

Speaker Pelosi has personally overseen her promise to improve the workings of Congress by “revamp[ing] congressional menus, replacing fatty, pre-made foods with healthier, gourmet alternatives. The once dreary congressional cafeterias now abound with haute cuisine”

The new fare contains not only foods unfamiliar to most American, but comes with higher costs leaving many consumers of the exclusive eatery unhappy with the changes. The increased prices are also due to Pelosi’s “’Greening the Capitol’ plan to make the House campus more environmentally friendly and socially progressive. ” Perhaps rather than trying to turn the Rayburn Cafeteria into a social programming and recycling experiment, Madam Speaker should just order that all congressional employees bring a lunch pail everyday.

With so many important mandates left undone, it is ludicrous to look at this effort by the speaker as any kind of accomplishment. Elected officials are sent to Washington to make changes for the benefit of their constituents and the country. What Pelosi has accomplished in the makeover the the Congressional cafeteria is an expensive version of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Women of America should be appalled that the legacy of the first female Speaker of the House will be one of implementing changes that cost more but delivered less.
